The Complete Civil War Road Trip Guide

Review by S. Archibald, 2010-01-31

I gave this to a good friend - a big Civil War buff - for Christmas. She's already planning trips. Lots of pictures, useful information, and, best of all, small, obscure sites are covered as well as the prominent battle sites.

Very Nice Civil War Guide Book

Review by Chris, 2009-12-30

This is a really good guide book on the Civil War by Michael Weeks. I really enjoyed reading it and will continue to consult it many times in the future. I like the maps and photographs that are contained. Though most Civil War buffs will know the battlefield summaries the information on the individual sites today is very informative. This is my favorite part of the book and I enjoy reading his opinions on how the site looks like now and how well preserved it is. Weeks should also be commended for going to many obscure locations and telling what a visitor can expect to see. The information on battles west of the Mississippi I find very enjoyably presented and contains much good site info. The famous campaigns of the war are also nicely presented.

I highly recommend this book to veteran and novice Civil War buff alike!

A+

Most comprehensive guide of its kind

Review by M.H., 2009-10-15

Countryman Press consistently produces quality guides and this one is up to their high standards. In its combination of battle synopses, directions, and geograpical range this is the most comprehensive guide to Civil War sites yet published. There are a few times in which directions to rural sites might be a little more detailed, but the directions provided will at the very least get the traveler pointed in the right direcction. This is an impressive accomplishment.

Excellent Civil War Battlefield Guide!

Review by Bob the Librarian, 2009-05-27

This Civil War guidebook is a must for the battlefield stomper! Ten weekend tours of Civil War battlefields and other sites are presented in a very informative, easy-to-follow format. There are four parts: The War in the West, The War on the Coasts, The War in the East, and The Wide-Ranging War (other Civil War sites). There are tours within each part. Each tour has a location map and an overview narrative followed by sections on People to Know, Things to Know, The Can't Miss Sites. The Site Detailed section has the address, phone number and hours of operation. There is also a Where to Stay section. The author has also included very good photographs throughout the book. A bibliography and appendices (principal battle lists and alternative battle names) are included at the end. The guidebook makes for a great addition to the book collection of any Civil War enthusiast, both novice and scholar.
